DE BEAUVIOR TOWN
Project Brief:
Create a contemporary living space for outdoor relaxation and entertaining. Materials palette to be crisp and chic with low maintenance planting to reflect the tastes and lifestyle of a busy professional couple.
This design seeks a fresh feel to a tired north London garden. Materials such as thin profile corten steel, and porcelain paving were chosen for their contemporary appearance; to more directly associate with the property’s rear modern extension, and to offer lower-maintenance appeal.
Two separate spaces on the mid and top level of this sloping garden were created to sit and relax. A small section of lawn was retained on the mid-level, and a hard-wearing composite decking was chosen as a surface material at the top. The topmost level was designed as decking rather than paving as the foundations for decking are less intrusive to mature tree roots. It was important to retain and look after the beautiful trees on this site whilst also maximizing the usability of the garden for entertaining.
The two meter wide stairway was designed as a ‘wow factor’ - visible from just inside client's front door, and the garden path and stairs were designed with small recessed spot lights fitted in to the paving to provide a subtle glow in the evenings.
The planting for this garden is all about lush textures. Evergreen ferns, bamboo, and Pittosporum mounds mix with seasonal movement and texture of cool climate ornamental grasses such as Hakonechloa, floriferous classics such as Hydrangea 'Annabelle', and exotic white Arum lillies.
